Biology – Research Scientist

ActivX Biosciences seeks a creative, motivated Biologist/Chemical Biologist to join our drug discovery team. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment to implement drug discovery efforts based on deep biological understanding coupled with biochemical rigor. Together, we will make new medicines for patients worldwide.

ActivX is in the Torrey Pines Science Park area on the Torrey Pines mesa in La Jolla, California. Research at ActivX is focused on drug discovery in the therapeutic areas of viral infection and metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Our proprietary KiNativ™ technology, used extensively internally, is provided on a fee-for-service basis to most other major pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The technology allows identification and development of highly selective drugs, significantly lowering development risks.

The successful candidate will have extensive training in modern cell and chemical biology concepts and methods. Additionally, the candidate must be able to clearly express their ideas, have strong experimental skills, a quantitative mindset, and a collaborative attitude.

Duties, Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Review literature, devise and conduct experiments to identify and validate new small-molecule drug targets, including methods such as:
    • Mammalian tissue culture, including transfections and stable cell-line generation and maintenance
    • Biochemical, enzymatic, and cell-based assays in microtiter plate format
  • Design quantitative assays to support medicinal chemistry
  • Lead project meetings
  • Write reports and present findings to colleagues
  • Strong attention to detail and works well in both a team environment and independently
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and excellent interpersonal skills

Qualifications

  • PhD in Biology, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • At least two years of drug-discovery experience, preferably in industry
  • Strong understanding of enzymology, biochemistry, cell biology, and drug discovery
  • Interest in learning new techniques and approaches
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, to communicate effectively, and to build collaborative relationships
  • Highly organized, with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experienced in mammalian cell culture, protein biochemistry, qPCR, and familiar with plate-based enzymatic assays

Physical Requirement

The incumbent may be required to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time. The incumbent may be required to climb, bend, lift, carry and kneel. The incumbent will also spend time looking at computer monitors and using his/her hands to operate laboratory and office equipment.
