Bioinformatics Programmer / Analyst (Temporary Position)

 

ActivX is seeking a full time programmer for a temporary assignment estimated to last approx. 6 months. With minimal guidance successful candidate will write, debug, test and deploy software that will be a part of an established, java-based web application. Create technical specifications to user requirements. Aid in the development of novel algorithms to analyze mass spectrometry and other proteomics data. Provide technical and end user support for commercial software solutions.


Primary Responsibilities:

• Support in-house and commercial information systems by configuring, administering, upgrading, integrating, and troubleshooting
• Interact and collaborate with end users and fellow Bioinformatics Analysts to develop and or deploy software solutions to support business processes
• Independently write software to implement solutions and tools as part of an existing, java-based laboratory information management system
• Independently create technical specifications to user requirements
• Serves as a technical lead for moderately complex solutions/projects
• Makes formal, technical presentations to the Informatics and supporting business groups
• Maintains change tracking systems (i.e. enhancements, bug fixes)
• Maintains software source code in revision control system
• Receives incoming requests (email, phone, face to face) provide timely solutions
• Interacts with analysts and end users to design, train, support, troubleshoot software solutions
• Plans and participates in major system upgrades such as application servers, database, etc.
• Provides mentorship and guidance to reporting staff and completing performance evaluations for reporting staff

 

Requirements:

• B.S. in Biology, Chemistry or Computer Science with 5 years life science industry experience, or
• M.S. in Biology, Chemistry or Computer Science with 3 years life science industry experience
• 4 years programming experience with the most of the following languages Java, SQL, HTML/DHTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, C/C++, Perl, shell scripting
• 2 years experience using relational databases in software development
• Understanding and experience in the software development life cycle (requirements gathering, prototyping, source control, defect tracking, etc)
• Proficient on UNIX/Linux operating systems
• Excellent communication, personal and organizational skills
• Proficient knowledge and understanding of the following web specifications and technologies: HTTP, XML, DOM2, CSS, HTML, Servlet, AJAX, WEB 2.0
• Good understanding and knowledge of scientific drug discovery processes
• Strong skills in web usability and application design

Help Desk Technician - Part time (20 flexible hours)

Primary Responsibilities:

Successful candidate will set up desktop computers, install operating systems and configure them for network use, respond to and resolve computer user issues (hardware and software), troubleshoot operating systems and software version conflicts, install and upgrade software and archive/backup network servers. Will also coordinate with manager and work on network issues.

 

Requirements:

Successful candidate is currently studying for a degree in Computer Science and has 6+ months experience in desktop/network maintenance. Requires specific knowledge of networking concepts specifically the TCP/IP protocol. Must be familiar with computer hardware and able to troubleshoot or replace system components. Ability to rebuild systems including hard drive formatting and software reinstallation. Experience with Window server, MS Exchange, backup programs and anti-virus software is desired. Familiar with Outlook, Word, Excel. Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Familiarity with Linux and Java/Perl helpful but not required.
