Activx Signs Agreements with the Scripps Research Institute

May 2000

Activx Biosciences announced that the company had entered into a license and sponsored research agreement with the Scripps Research Institute that will form the initial basis of its activity-based proteomics platform. Activx Biosciences is an emerging biotechnology company that is applying its technology toward the discovery of novel biological targets in a number of diseases using the power of activity-based proteomics to meet the drug development challenges of the post-genomic era. First generation proteomics is limited primarily to high abundance proteins and provides no information about whether the proteins detected are in an active or inactive state. Activx's technology goes straight to the central question of post-genomic biology--which protein activities are responsible for health and disease? The company's high-throughput platform provides protein activity profiles that highlight targets for treatment and diagnosis in major disease areas and speeds the development of therapeutics directed at new protein targets. The agreements with the Scripps Research Institute enables Activx to draw upon specific work in the laboratories of Ben Cravatt and Erik Sorensen who have been at the forefront of exploring the interface of chemistry and biology, where the tools for activity-based proteomics have been developed and are being refined. "We are excited about the opportunity to work with some of the world's best scientists in the field of protein activity and chemistry to further the development of our platform technology," said Robert Hillman, co-founder and CEO of Activx Biosciences. "We expect that our collaboration with scientists at the Scripps Research Institute will play a significant role in our development of the next-generation of proteomics" Hillman concluded.
