Technology – Research Scientist

ActivX Biosciences is currently seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Research Scientist to catalyze our drug discovery efforts. The successful candidate will work with other scientists to run our proprietary mass spectrometry technology (KiNativ®) to support both internal drug discovery efforts as well as third party profiling projects. Together, we will make new medicines for patients worldwide.

ActivX is in the Torrey Pines Science Park area on the Torrey Pines mesa in La Jolla, California. Research at ActivX is focused on drug discovery in the therapeutic areas of viral infection and metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Our proprietary KiNativ™ technology, used extensively internally, is provided on a fee-for-service basis to most other major pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The technology allows identification and development of highly selective drugs, significantly lowering development risks.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • As part of a team, provide operational support of MS core facility using established protocols, sample preparation, running instruments, & troubleshooting as necessary
  • Analyze & interpret results for the KiNativ platform, prepare reports for the analysis
  • Analyze & interpret results for small molecule analysis (protein binding, compound stability, etc.)
  • Communicate results with other scientists, present results during project team meetings
  • Complete tasks on aggressive timelines & effectively manage multiple projects at one time
  • Possibly supervise research associates


  • Ph.D. in biological sciences or analytical chemistry
  • 2-5 years postgraduate experience in a research laboratory setting
  • Available to monitor instrument performance during weekends using VPN (typically one hour or less). However, if problems are detected, may have to work during the weekend to resolve any issues
  • Demostrated team player
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, have good attention to details, to communicate effectively, and to build collaborative relationships
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and excellent interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Firsthand experience operating & troubleshooting mass spec instruments
  • Familiarity with MS software analysis packages like XCalibur, Pinpoint, Skyline, etc.
  • Working familiarity of kinases & kinase inhibitors
  • Basic understanding of enzymology, and small molecule proteins interactions

Physical Requirement

The incumbent may be required to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time. The incumbent may be required to climb, bend, lift, carry and kneel. The incumbent will also spend time looking at computer monitors and using his/her hands to operate laboratory and office equipment.
